Rwanda is a landlocked country in central Africa’s great rift valley. Kigali, located in the center of the country on the Ruganwa River, is the capital city. Rwanda is located a few degrees south of the equator, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The common language of the Rwandan people is Kinyarwanda, while other official languages include English, French, and Kiswahili.

Mountains to the west and savanna to the southeast dominate Rwanda, home to numerous lakes such as Lake Kivu, Lake Burera, and Lake Ihema. Its climate is temperate, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons each year.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial documents the 1994 mass killings in Rwanda that were linked to the country’s civil war. Armed Hutu militias carried out the genocide against the Tutsi, moderate Hutu, and Twa. The civil war lasted for 100 days, during which time no other countries intervened. The majority of the victims met their demise in their own villages or towns, often at the hands of their neighbors and fellow villagers. Rwanda preserves other genocide sites, such as the Nyamata genocide memorial, the Murambi genocide memorial, and the Gisozi genocide memorial, which serve as memorials for their people, tourist attractions, and educational tools for the younger generation.

Kigali city Rwanda has a craft village selling traditional handcrafts, including wood carvings, woven baskets, art and crafts, and customized clothes made by the local people. Kigali has vibrant restaurants and a nightlife that seems enjoyable, entertaining, and fabulous. Beautiful museums, such as the ethnographic museums, the Ingabo Museum, the Kandt House Museum, and the Rwanda Art Museum, abound in the city, offering a diverse range of exhibitions, showcasing Rwandan culture and traditional aspects. The largest of these museums is the ethnographic museum in Butare, which boasts ancient artifacts related to Rwandan traditions and a wealth of historical culture that draws in tourists.
