Wilderness Rwanda safaris: Wildlife safaris in Akagera

Rwanda Wilderness Safaris has recently established a new camp in Akagera National Park, thereby expanding its presence in Rwanda’s ecotourism sector. The camp, named Magashi, will be located in the northeastern region of Akagera, offering a scenic view of Lake Rwanyakazinga. This effort is a collaboration between the Rwanda Development Board, African Parks, and a conservation organization. Wilderness  has been able to make this additional commitment thanks to the financial support the Howard G. Buffett Foundation gave African Parks for the preservation and development of Akagera.

“In 2018, to celebrate our 35th anniversary of making a positive impact, we are pleased to announce our partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and African Parks.” “This collaboration showcases our dedication to leading the way in sustainable and genuine ecotourism in Rwanda,” stated Grant Woodrow, Chief Operations Officer of Wilderness Rwanda Safaris. The main goal of the new Classic Camp is to provide our guests with an exceptional experience of the savannah while also playing a vital role in conserving Rwanda’s last protected savannah habitat and its distinct species, such as the shoebill and black rhino.

Akagera National Park spans 100,000 hectares and is located in the eastern region of Rwanda, adjacent to Tanzania. Since 2010, African Parks and the RDB have been jointly supervising the park’s administration. The area includes some of the most picturesque savannah landscapes in East Africa, including vast plains, woodlands, lakes, wetlands, and rolling grassy hills. Magashi Camp, a secluded refuge, will be located on the banks of Lake Rwanyakazinga.

Akagera has had a substantial metamorphosis during the past eight years, effectively eradicating poaching and observing a flourishing population of species. In 2015, African Parks successfully reinstated lions that had been absent for 20 years. Additionally, in 2017, they returned black rhinoceros to the area.
Visitors will have the opportunity to observe many species of animals through professionally-guided excursions, including game drives, walks, and boating expeditions. The fauna in the region included buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, spotted hyena, zebra, topi, roan, eland, and several other species. The park is home to more than 500 avian species, including the remarkable shoebill with its remarkably large bill and the red-faced barbet, which is mostly found only in this region.

Undoubtedly, the disproportionate emphasis on gorillas has caused numerous travelers to overlook the remarkably picturesque and fruitful savannahs of Rwanda. By introducing Magashi, we offer our travelers the perfect chance to combine an exceptional gorilla experience in Volcanoes National Park with a magnificent savannah expedition in Akagera, all while staying at Bisate Lodge. Furthermore, Woodrow asserted that Rwanda provides a comprehensive and distinctive safari encounter by granting guests the opportunity to observe chimpanzees and other primates inhabiting the forests in the western region of the nation.

We are delighted to inform you that we have partnered with Wilderness Safaris to create Magashi Camp. This endeavor has been made possible via the generous assistance of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for African Parks. Jes Gruner, the Park Manager for Akagera National Park, has indicated that this relationship is focused on safeguarding and optimizing the economic opportunities of Akagera. Akagera has attained almost 75% self-sufficiency within a span of just eight years by generating cash from tourism, thereby offering economic support to the neighboring towns. Last year, the park’s gates recorded over 36,000 visitors, with Rwandan citizens accounting for 50% of the total. This acknowledgement highlights the significance of Akagera and Rwanda’s natural heritage, as well as the crucial role that tourism plays in ensuring the long-term viability of this extraordinary region.
Developing sustainable and long-lasting conservation economies throughout Africa is a major goal of Wilderness Safaris. “We are motivated by the opportunity to apply our responsible ecotourism model in Rwanda, which will contribute to conservation efforts and uplift local communities in this exceptional and exciting environment,” he elaborated. Flights to Kidepo are only available on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

What to know about wilderness Rwanda safaris

Upon initiating collaboration with the local community in Bisate, Wilderness Rwanda Safaris recognized the imminent involvement of its non-profit associate, Children in the Wilderness. Children in the Wilderness Rwanda officially introduced its novel Eco-Club program by conducting its inaugural Eco-Mentor training session at Bisate Lodge in March 2018. Both the teachers of Bisate Primary School and the staff of Wilderness Rwanda Safaris have generously offered their time as Eco-Mentors and have made a dedicated commitment to overseeing the Eco-Club Programme at the school. Our Eco-Clubs convene on a weekly basis, during which our Eco-Mentors impart teachings from our Eco-Club Resource Book.
In late 2019, two additional primary schools, Akayange and Gisunzu, located near Akagera and Gishwati-Mukuru national parks respectively, entered into a partnership with Children in the Wilderness. This collaboration expanded the program’s presence in Rwanda to include all locations where Wilderness Rwanda Safaris operates.
Children in the Wilderness collaborate closely with schools to cultivate and mentor Eco-Club members, with the goal of nurturing them into influential figures in sustainable conservation, starting from the very beginning. The objective is to offer the participants a well-organized curriculum that will afford them the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the environment and broaden their expertise on matters pertaining to conservation.

People in the wildness rwanda safari

Wilderness Rwanda  Safaris places great importance on people. The members of our staff are individuals who hold the same views and values as our organization, and collectively, they constitute the extended Wilderness Rwanda community. These individuals are essential intermediaries between our visitors, partners, and the wilderness. Their warmth, inspiration, and commitment, coupled with their extensive expertise and passion, bring a whole new level of meaning to the concept of service.
Our organization has approximately 2,300 employees who are responsible for upholding the principles of the Wilderness Way. This entails having a modest sense of pride in the organization’s broader vision and the impact we aim to achieve, as we work in various locations throughout Africa, including offices and remote camps. They communicate their passion to our guests and, by imparting their knowledge, inspire them to explore ecological and conservation ideas.

Kigali is the bustling and contemporary metropolis that lies at the geographic center of Rwanda. Upon achieving independence in 1962, Kigali became the capital of the nation and currently serves as Rwanda’s largest city with a population of around 1 million. Furthermore, it is the country’s primary business hub and main point of entry. A compelling and essential experience in Kigali is a trip to the Genocide Memorial, which pays tribute to the over one million individuals who lost their lives in the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. Additionally, there are alternative museums to explore, along with a plethora of restaurants and marketplaces to savor. It is widely recognized as the cleanest city in Africa.
